Staffing
Last term you were informed that Rosina Tippen will remain on leave through to the end of the year as she recovers from injury. We are looking forward to having her volunteer in Ōtākaro Hub when possible. We are grateful to Rachel who will remain in the job share position with Jodi for this time. Claire Howison has been been catering to the needs of our mathematicians during the past two terms by becoming an additional teacher during this time. Her role has changed this term as she will be Acting Principal while Ginnie is on sabbatical leave. We welcome Angela Clarke to the team. She will be working with some of Ōtākaro and Waimakariri Hub children from 9 - 10:10 on Mondays - Thursdays. We warmly welcome Melanie Crowther to Ōtākaro Hub. She is completing her final teaching placement as a student at Canterbury University. Melanie will be with us during the first half of the term and working closely with Renée and Ōtākaro 1. Kylie Ellis is taking a well deserved break with her family in Rarotonga. She will be back with us in week 2. Olivia Hanson continues as Sam’s release teacher every Friday. Glen McKenzie will provide Renee’s leadership release this term. Her release days are usually every second Wednesday (even weeks). Core Literacies Many children have moved classes for reading, writing and mathematics. Mid year reporting assessments along with social and mixed ability groupings have been the driving force behind this change. Our writing focus for the first three weeks is our bi-annual speech competition. Children have received the rubric and are in the process of writing and practising their three minute speech. It is recommended they focus on pace and eye contact along with practising in front of an audience at home as a part of their home fun. Home base finals will be held in week 4. The top two from each home base will then compete on Tuesday 22 August at 10:30 for the Year 5/6 Speech Cup. We are excited that Michael Williams has offered to be our judge for this competition. Reading continues to based on the needs of individuals. This will vary depending on the group and class. Some are will be working on Hilton Aryey resources whilst others will be reading journals and chapter books. Numeracy plays a major role in our mathematics curriculum. Strategies specific to children’s numeracy strategy level will be taught across addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, proportions and ratios. It is pivotal children continue to practise the speed of recall of all of their basic facts. Sport & Physical Education Children will continue to participate in weekly sport at Hagley and Nunweek Park. This competition recommences this Friday and concludes Friday 25th August. Zone Winter Tournament is scheduled for Monday 7th August with a postponement date on Wednesday 9th August. This involves our current Hagley Sports teams competing against other teams in the North East Zone and is held at South Hagley Park (Hockey could possibly be located elsewhere). Any teams that win the competition will then compete in the Canterbury Winter Tournament held on Thursday 24th August. PE this term will begin with a continuation of invasion games from Term 2, as the weather did not allow for many lessons. When the weather warms up we will move on to striking and fielding games as well as preparation for Term 4 athletics. Golf in Schools As part of our Term 3 activities we will he having in-school golf lessons. This involves 3 lessons per home base (one per week in Weeks 5-7) culminating in a trip to an actual golf course in Week 8 where all children complete 3 holes. Details of this trip will confirmed closer to the time, however we will require parent transport. Topic This term we are looking at ‘The building blocks of our bodies.’ Science, Health and Physical Education will be our main areas of focus. The children will look at the muscles, bones, cells and organs that make up our bodies. We will look at heart rates and body responses and this will tie in with our golf study and fitness programme. Cultural Festival Te Mahuri Kapa Haka have been spending time learning waiata, haka and poi as a part of their performance piece for cultural festival. We envisage there will be more practises in the lead up to this event and we support our tamariki as they work hard to present a polished performance on Wednesday 16th August. Home Fun We have used the Sounds Alive spelling programme over the past two terms. We have been impressed with the progress the children have made in learning to spell and apply spelling rules. This term we feel the children are ready for a new focus. We are now focusing on vocabulary. The children will select their own words each Friday from a list on a GoogleDoc - words might include homophones antonyms, prefix/suffixes and so on. We would then like to see the children use these words in context as well as learn to spell them. Les Mills Trip Next week, Thursday 3rd August we will be travelling to and from Les Mills by bus to partake in a Born to Move class. We will depart from school at 1:15pm and return at 2:30pm to be back by the end of the school day. Born to Move teaches the students a variety of skills such as agility and fitness. Children are welcome to wear mufti that is suitable for exercising. We require 8 adult helpers from our hub for this trip take place. Please email Renee if you are available. Wow! Term 3 is already shaping up to be an exciting and enriching time. We are all incredibly excited about our upcoming move into our new space at the end of the term. As always; we look forward to seeing you around. Please contact us in person, via email or phone if you have any questions or concerns. Sam, Renee, Rachel & Jodi
