It was finally time for us to move into our new space! This week we spent lots of time packing up. We were very good at taking home things that no longer needed to be at school. We did lots of packing and lots of cleaning. On Friday our teachers were released to set up our new space. We all attended a blessing for our space then washed our hands and had something yummy to eat. At the end of the day the children all came in and saw what it looks like! It was so exciting. Everyone chose a locker and a cubby. We are so excited to start our learning journey in our new space.

St Albans success continued with a fantastic representation at the Digi Awards this week. Over the last two terms the Techie Kids have been working on projects to enter in the Digi Awards. We could work in groups or by ourselves and could enter as many categories as we wanted to. It was lots of fun discovering new techie things we could do and also working with our friends. We had to work hard during lunch times and at home because we didn't have class time to do our entries. The Digi Awards celebration night was on Tuesday. St Albans School did so well. Congratulations to everyone who entered. During this term Emily, Lily, Olivia, Noah, Eve, Magnus and Swali worked hard on the Tournament of Minds. This is the first year St Albans School has participated in this competition. The children had to work completely independently to create a performance that combined two countries. They had a 3x3m square stage. There were many, many criteria the children had to abide by. They created props and a script. On the day they also had spontaneous challenges. Ōtākaro came first! This is a huge achievement and so exciting. It also means this team of children will travel to Wellington to compete in the national competition. We will look forward to hearing how they get on in a couple of weeks. We were very lucky to have Des Hunt, a New Zealand author, visit our school this week. Des talked to us about how he links science, nature and writing together to create great adventures. He explained how authors have to rework their writing lots of times and to hook their reader into the story. Des related his approach to writing to science experiments - he had us all on the edge of our seats as he did physics experiments that demonstrated the importance of hooking the reader, having a problem, resolution and strong ending to ensure the reader remains interested in the whole story. Later in the day some lucky children took their writing book and worked with Des to improve their own writing skills. Des was an inspirational speaker and very entertaining to listen to. We have been learning about the human anatomy, We had great fun creating some chalk drawings that show our anatomy. We traced around a friend and used books and devices to draw our anatomy in life size detail. Paki is off to live in Australia. We had a very busy Friday with Paki having organised a disco and speech along with a shared lunch to celebrate his time at St Albans School. Paki - you are known for your cheeky sense of humour, your energy and enthusiasm and for delivering fantastic speeches - which you did again on your last day at our school! We know you will love being back in Australia. We will miss you at St Albans School and will look forward to you keeping in touch. When Year 6 children leave St Albans school we gift them a pounamu to wear around their neck. Jodi and Rachel chose the perfect one for Paki and presented him with this following his speech. Good luck Paki. The Rugby League World Cup is being co-hosted by New Zealand and Australia. We were very lucky to have the Rugby League World Cup visit our school on Friday. We were in awe of the size of the cup. We listened to some players talk to us about rugby league and felt inspired by the messages they shared. In 2017, the best Rugby League players from around the globe will be in Australia and New Zealand to contest the Rugby League World Cup. From Friday 27 October and until 2 December 2017, the Rugby League World Cup will see 14 teams play 28 games over five weeks - all hoping to be crowned World Cup winners and hold aloft the Paul Barrière Trophy. The tournament will be played in all four corners of the host nations, Australia and New Zealand, along with three pool matches being played in Papua New Guinea in front of some of the world’s most passionate rugby league fans. We can go to a game in Christchurch! We had a great afternoon doing a PE rotation. We did padder tennis, bowls and mini golf as well as worked on designing a new playground for our school. We are developing some excellent skills and working well in teams to show great sporting attitudes. We had fun learning how to strike a golf ball as part of the Golf in Schools programme. We have two more sessions at school before we go to a real golf course! Check your email for a message from Jodi requesting parent help for this. We felt very proud of the tamariki who participated in the Year 5 and 6 speech finals on Tuesday.
This event was judged by Michael Williams - a very challenging task as the standard was so high. Congratulations to Lola - 1st Mathias - 2nd Lucy and Rory - 3rd= Well done to Millie, Eden, Harper, Tanner and Emma who represented Ōtākaro so well. |
